Consider 4-Socket Servers Instead of 2-Socket Servers to Reduce Your TCO by up to 70%

When considering server purchases, it may be time to consider adding additional headroom for growth in your space- and/or power-constrained data center. There are many factors to consider when making the buying decision, but if performance is key for future growth and spikes, it may make sense to step up to the new 4-socket servers based on Intel® Xeon® processors E5-4600 product family.

For this comparison, we assumed 135 servers based on the Intel® Xeon® processor E5606 and 100 servers based on the Intel Xeon processor E5-2609 which equates to similar performance of 32 servers based on the Intel® Xeon® processor E5-4607. Fewer servers deployed results in a lower total server hardware acquisition cost and thus fewer OS licenses required to purchase and maintain. Fewer servers and improved density also translates to lower data center power and cooling costs as well as less server maintenance required. All of this culminates in an estimated 4-year total cost of ownership (TCO) advantage up to 70%.

Different comparisons in system configuration and performance benchmarks may yield different results. Other than the obvious change in processor SKU, one change in hardware configuration that may impact the TCO advantage is memory population. The larger the memory footprint assumed, the higher the impact on the total server acquisition cost and the larger the difference between the memory subsystem cost for both 2S and 4S platforms. This is because the Intel Xeon processor E5-4600 product family has twice the memory capacity and thus can optimize the memory subsystem cost compared to the Intel® Xeon® processor E5-2600 product family, allowing for use of lower-cost DIMM densities. Based on January 2012 pricing, the memory capacity at which systems based on the Intel Xeon processor E5-4600 product family see an advantage over the Intel Xeon processor E5-2600 product family is 256 GB and above. (Of course, memory pricing changes regularly, so customers should perform their own analysis to determine their TCO advantages.)
